Coffee Museum
Inside a restored two-storey family house deep in Al Fahidi's lanes, the Coffee Museum traces the long journey of the bean from the highlands of Ethiopia and Yemen to the majlis of the Gulf. Opened in 2014 by Emirati collector Khalid Al Mulla, it gathers antique roasters, grinders, dallah pots and manuscripts from across the world, while the scent of gahwa roasting over coals drifts through the courtyard — an open invitation to sit, sip and listen.

Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding
Behind carved teak doors in a grand wind-tower house, the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding has welcomed guests since 1998 under one warm motto: Open Doors, Open Minds. Visitors share Emirati breakfasts and lunches on the majlis floor, ask anything they like about local faith, dress and custom, and walk the district with Emirati hosts. It is the friendliest classroom in Dubai — one where the lesson is served with dates, gahwa and unhurried conversation.

Coins Museum
Eight small rooms in a coral-stone house hold more than 470 rare coins — dirhams and dinars that once changed hands in markets from Damascus to Delhi. Opened by Dubai Municipality in 2004, the Coins Museum follows money as it moved with pearls, spices and cloth through the Gulf, and magnifier touchscreens let you study a seventh-century inscription up close. Entry is free, and the hush inside feels like the moment a merchant's old strongbox creaks open.

XVA Gallery
Since 2003, XVA has turned a restored courtyard house into one of the Gulf's most respected homes for contemporary art from the Arab world, Iran and the subcontinent. Paintings and installations hang in whitewashed rooms opening onto the courtyard, a small art hotel occupies the upper floor, and the shaded café below serves a famously good vegetarian menu. Wander in from the sikka and you may leave following a new artist — or at least carrying a mint lemonade.

Arabian Tea House
White rattan chairs, turquoise cushions and lace curtains fill the courtyard of this beloved café, opened in 1997 as the Basta Art Café and now known across the city as Arabian Tea House. The menu runs from Emirati breakfast trays of balaleet and chebab to well over a hundred teas, all served in the shade of an old heritage house. This is where Al Fahidi slows down — teapots clinking, sparrows hopping between tables, shadows lengthening at their own pace.

The Majlis Gallery
In a wind-tower house beside Al Fahidi Roundabout, British artist Alison Collins founded The Majlis Gallery in 1989 — Dubai's first fine-art gallery, a courtyard of paintings, ceramics and glass gathered around a flowering henna tree. For three decades it introduced the city to artists inspired by the region's desert, creek and light, and its small rooms helped shape Dubai's early love affair with art. Its story is woven into the district's own revival, and its name still opens conversations here.

House of Arabic Calligraphy
The House of Arabic Calligraphy celebrates the letter as an art form in its own right. In quiet rooms off a shaded courtyard, works in Kufic, Thuluth, Diwani and Naskh scripts show how a single alphabet can carry a thousand moods, from monumental to playful. Exhibitions and workshops invite visitors to pick up the qalam themselves and feel the discipline behind every curve — and to write their own names the way poems are written. A small house with a vast subject: the beauty of the written word.

Wind-Tower House
This restored merchant house shows off the genius of the barjeel: a four-sided wind tower that catches the Gulf breeze and pours it down into the rooms below — air conditioning centuries before electricity. Houses like this one were built in the late 1800s by trading families from Bastak in southern Persia, using coral stone, gypsum, palm trunks and teak, turning thick walls and shaded courtyards into a private climate. Stand directly beneath the tower shaft and feel the desert heat suddenly break into a breeze.

Al Fahidi (Bastakiya) Mosque
Tucked between the wind-tower houses, this modest working mosque has called the quarter to prayer for generations. Its whitewashed walls, small dome and slender minaret follow the same quiet geometry as the homes around it — gypsum, coral stone and generous shade. It remains a living place of worship rather than a monument, so visitors admire it respectfully from the sikka, while guided cultural tours run by the neighbouring SMCCU open some of its rituals to guests with care and warmth.

Old Dubai City Wall
A few metres of coral stone and gypsum are all that remain of the wall that once ringed old Bur Dubai. Raised around 1800, it ran roughly six hundred metres and stood some two and a half metres high, guarding the town until urban growth swallowed it early in the twentieth century. The fragment preserved here in its original place, with its interpretive panel, is Dubai in miniature: a city that outgrew its own defences within a century — and simply kept going.

Art Alley
In the sikkas at the district's western edge, plaster walls become canvases. Murals, contemporary calligraffiti and installations — many of them born during the Sikka Art & Design Festival that Al Fahidi's lanes have hosted since 2011 — turn a stroll into a scavenger hunt for colour. Studios and small galleries open onto the alleys, and new pieces appear each season, so no two visits are ever the same. Come at golden hour, when the paint and the sand-lime walls glow together.

Dubai Creek Edge
Where the district meets Dubai Creek, the city's whole story comes into view. Abras shuttle across the water as they have for a century, dhows ride at anchor, and the breeze carries gulls and salt. This khor — the sheltered inlet — is the reason Dubai exists at all: pearls sailed out to the world from here, and cloth and spices sailed in from India and East Africa. Stand at the railing at sunset and watch Deira light up across water the colour of hammered brass.

Bastakiah Nights Restaurant
In a restored courtyard house strung with lanterns, Bastakiah Nights serves Emirati and Middle Eastern dishes the slow way — lamb machboos, fresh saj bread, mint tea to finish. Diners sit in rooms opening onto the courtyard or up on the rooftop terrace, where the wind towers stand in silhouette against the modern city's glow. This is the district after dark: quiet lanes, warm light on old plaster, and a long dinner that feels like being an honoured guest in an old family home.

Philately House
Home to the Emirates Philatelic Association, this heritage house tells national history at postage-stamp scale. Displays trace the region's mail from Trucial States-era issues to the first stamps of the young UAE, alongside postmarks, covers and collectors' albums. It sounds niche until you lean in close: every tiny engraving is a snapshot of what the country wanted the world to see — forts, falcons, oil rigs, space. Serious collectors trade stories here; the merely curious just marvel.

Heritage Sikka
The sikka is the district's secret architecture: a passage barely two arm-spans wide, running between high plaster walls the colour of sand. These lanes were engineered for shade and breeze — narrow enough to stay cool at noon, aligned so they pull moving air through the whole quarter. Follow this one past studded teak doors and bougainvillea spilling over the walls, and let the passage decide your route; in Al Fahidi, getting gently lost is the whole point.

Al Fahidi Fort – Dubai Museum
Just west of the district stands Al Fahidi Fort — an adjacent landmark rather than part of the historical quarter itself. Built around 1787 and generally considered the oldest surviving building in Dubai, its coral-stone towers guarded the town and served as the ruler's seat, a store and a jail before Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed opened Dubai Museum within its walls in 1971. The fort anchors every walk through old Dubai — a sturdy grandfather watching over Al Fahidi's slender wind towers.

Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House
A short walk along the creek in Al Shindagha — an adjacent landmark outside the district proper — this 1896 house was the residence of Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai from 1912 to 1958, and the childhood home of Sheikh Rashid. Its rooms now hold a remarkable archive of photographs, documents and coins showing the creek city before oil. The carved gypsum screens alone, casting lace-like shadows at noon, are worth the walk.
