Al Fahidi Fort – Dubai Museum

Just west of the district stands Al Fahidi Fort — an adjacent landmark rather than part of the historical quarter itself. Built around 1787 and generally considered the oldest surviving building in Dubai, its coral-stone towers guarded the town and served as the ruler's seat, a store and a jail before Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed opened Dubai Museum within its walls in 1971. The fort anchors every walk through old Dubai — a sturdy grandfather watching over Al Fahidi's slender wind towers.

Al Fahidi Fort: Dubai's Oldest Building, Guarding Its Memory

A few steps west of the lanes of the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood — just outside its boundary — crouches the oldest standing building in all of Dubai: Al Fahidi Fort, whose earliest tower dates to around 1787. Its thick walls of coral rock and mortar have lived through successive roles that summarise the emirate's history: seat of government and residence of the ruler, then a weapons store, and at times a prison, before Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum opened it in 1971 as the official Dubai Museum — the very year the UAE federation was born. The bond between the fort and the neighbouring quarter is closer than it looks: the historical district carries the fort's own name, the old city wall once enclosed them both within the first town's limits, and when the merchants of Bastakiya built their fine houses, the fort's towers were the first thing they saw each morning. In the museum's halls — expanded underground in 1995 — you move through scenes of life before oil: the old souk with its sounds, pearl diving, the majlis of family homes, and archaeological finds thousands of years old. In recent years the fort has undergone a comprehensive restoration as part of the wider revival of Dubai's historic district. Make it the beginning of your walk or its finale: from beside its walls you grasp the whole story, from a small town behind a wall to a city that touches the clouds.
