Bastakiah Nights Restaurant

In a restored courtyard house strung with lanterns, Bastakiah Nights serves Emirati and Middle Eastern dishes the slow way — lamb machboos, fresh saj bread, mint tea to finish. Diners sit in rooms opening onto the courtyard or up on the rooftop terrace, where the wind towers stand in silhouette against the modern city's glow. This is the district after dark: quiet lanes, warm light on old plaster, and a long dinner that feels like being an honoured guest in an old family home.

Bastakiah Nights: Dinner in a House from the Pearl Era

Some restaurants serve food; others serve an entire era. Bastakiah Nights, set in a restored heritage house within the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, belongs firmly to the second kind. You enter through a heavy wooden door and find yourself in an open courtyard beneath the sky, seating arranged among arches and gypsum-plastered walls, a wind tower rising above you — once the only air conditioning this house ever had. In the evening the lanterns come on, and the place recovers something of the quarter's old nights, when families gathered in their courtyards to escape the heat of the rooms. The table here celebrates Emirati and Arabic cooking: dishes like machboos with its spiced rice, harees slow-cooked for hours, fresh Gulf fish — and to finish, golden luqaimat dumplings dipped in date syrup, alongside cardamom-scented Arabic coffee. But at least half the experience is the setting itself: eating in a house raised by the pearl and textile merchants of more than a century ago, glancing up between bites to see Dubai's stars from an open courtyard, exactly as the first residents of Bastakiya saw them. Book a courtyard table on a mild winter night, and arrive half an hour early on purpose — get a little lost in the surrounding sikkas first. An appetite here deserves to be built slowly.
