Old Dubai City Wall

A few metres of coral stone and gypsum are all that remain of the wall that once ringed old Bur Dubai. Raised around 1800, it ran roughly six hundred metres and stood some two and a half metres high, guarding the town until urban growth swallowed it early in the twentieth century. The fragment preserved here in its original place, with its interpretive panel, is Dubai in miniature: a city that outgrew its own defences within a century — and simply kept going.

The Old City Wall: When All of Dubai Slept Behind One Wall

It is easy to walk straight past it: a low run of rough, ancient-looking wall, preserved behind glass inside the Al Fahidi quarter. Yet this modest fragment is one of the oldest built witnesses Dubai possesses. Around the year 1800, a wall of coral stone and gypsum wrapped itself around the whole of old Bur Dubai, gathering Al Fahidi Fort, the Grand Mosque and the townspeople's houses within its embrace — roughly two and a half metres high and about half a metre thick. Dubai in those days was a small coastal town living off pearl diving and trade, and the wall was both its boundary and its guardian. By the early twentieth century, the growing town had outgrown its old skin; most of the wall was pulled down so houses and souks could spread, and only small sections survived, restored and protected by Dubai Municipality in 2001. Stand close to the remnant and study its texture: you can pick out seashells and coral fragments embedded in the masonry, because the people of Dubai quite literally built their city out of their sea. Then lift your eyes toward the distant skyscrapers and compare. The distance between this wall — which once contained the entire city — and today's skyline is, simply put, one of the fastest stories of urban growth in modern history. An entire city's biography, told in a few metres of stone.
